OUR SERVICES
BOREHOLE DRILLING, TESTING AND EQUIPPING
BOREHOLE DRILLING
A variety of different drilling techniques can be used for the drilling of water production boreholes, dolomitic investigation drilling, mine dewatering and monitoring boreholes. Our capabilities include rotary percussion, mud rotary, reverse circulation, ODEX, and Symmetrix. We have recently acquired the capability of a BOBCAT mounted drilling rig that will give us the opportunity to service customers with limited access.
The following parameters will be closely monitored during the drilling process:
Site selection
Drilling
Sampling
Penetration rates
Reaming
Casing type (uPVC, steel, Stainless Steel – solid and perforated)
Casing installation
Formation stabiliser
Development
Blow-yield testing
Finishing and cleaning
Existing boreholes in need of repair or deepening might need cleanout, re-development and possible new casing installation. The contractor needs to advise the client in this regard as in some cases this option in not advisable and uneconomical.
BOREHOLE TESTING
Quantity
On completion of the drilling process it is essential that the quantity needs to be investigated. This process will quantify the following parameters:
The performance of the borehole the efficiency of the borehole, or variation of its performance under different rates of discharge quantify aquifer characteristics water quality.
The test consists of a variable discharge rate (or ‘step drawdown’) test followed by a constant discharge and recovery test. From the data of these tests we will be able to make a recommendation of the abstraction rate as well as daily pump times.
Water Quality
Laboratory testing of various chemical, microbiological and physiological parameters of borehole and potable water sources (drinking water) is imperative to household users of a borehole water source. Results of analyses from water testing laboratories provide third-party verification of the quality of drinking water sources and the suitability of water sources for human consumption.
CIVIL CONSTRUCTION AND EQUIPPING
Once the quantity and quality have been established we will be able to advise the client on any construction needed (tanks, pipes, irrigation etc.) as well as the selection of a suitable pump with regards to the placement depth, yield and pump cycles. We will also be able to accommodate bigger projects which include special construction of pipelines, reservoirs, pumping stations and telemetry.

Professionals
Leading our team is Alfred Ahrens, a qualified Geologist with 33 years of experience.
OUR TEAM
With a honours degree in Geology and one of the founding members of VSA Earth Science Consultants in 1989 he gained vast experience in the Geological and geo-hydrological fields. Experience in borehole siting, drilling and testing supervision and reporting led to the establishment of Aquanova Ltd Zambia in 1994. After four years as Manager of the turnkey drilling operations in Lusaka, he joined J&M Drilling in 1998 as manager. As the sole proprietor since 2016 his experience in different geological settings throughout Southern Africa, project management, financial management and logistical support is of huge benefit to the excellent service for our clients.

Elize graduated with a BCur degree from the University of Pretoria in 1985 and started her career in accounting in 1995 during her time with Aquanova LTD, Zambia (a sub-division of VSA Geoconsultants). In 1999 with her return to South Africa, she started working at J&M Drilling as the financial officer and was later promoted to CFO in 2005. She has vast experience in all aspects of accounting and have completed numerous courses in Pastel Accounting. She started SENZOGYSTIX (PTY) LTD, an associated drilling and testing company in 2016. She is currently the CEO of SENZOGYSTIX as well as the CFO of J&M Drilling.

Gawie qualified as a Drill Rig Operator in 1999 during his time with the Department of Agriculture. He started working for J&M Drilling in 2004 as a field manager. During his time with the company he acquired extensive experience in all aspects of field management, project management, equipment maintenance and repairs as well as costing and reporting. He experience include DTH drilling in all sizes from 141mm up to 561mm with depths of up to 380m for Sedibeng Water. Mud rotary projects include drilling of 95 production boreholes for the City Council of Cape Town. He is currently Operations Manager at J&M Drilling.

OUR PROJECTS
Frequently Asked
What is the advantage of ground water supply?
The drilling of a borehole gives a potential client access to safe and potable water through access to primary water supply…..more
Which drilling methods can be used?
Once a suitable site has been selected and the drilling decided on, the proper drilling method must be chosen…..more
How deep should I drill?
The question, then, is: When to stop drilling?…..more
What is borehole reaming?
When the borehole is drilled to the desired depth and the water bearing structure have been intersected…..more
How does the contractor decide where to place solid and perforated casing?
When a borehole has been completed, the placing of solid and perforated needs to be decided upon…..more
What is formation sampling?
Formation samples needs to be obtained as drilling proceeds: the usual sampling interval is one meter…..more
What is formation stabilizer or a gravel pack?
After the casing and screen string have been inserted, natural material will tend to fall from the walls of the borehole into the annular space…..more
What is borehole development?
After the installation of the permanent casing, screens, and gravel packs (if any), dirty water, mud, crushed rock, oil (from the drilling machinery)…..more
What is a blow yield?
Air is blown into the borehole and its pressure adjusted so that the outflow of water is equal to the inflow: this is known as the ‘blow-yield’…..more
When does a borehole needs to be rehabilitated?
Rehabilitation is the action taken to repair a borehole whose productivity has declined or that has failed through…..more
Why do I need borehole testing?
After drilling has been completed, the client will have to decide whether a test pump is required. It has the following objectives…..more
Reports needed from the Contractor?
On completion of a borehole, the contractor needs to issue the following reports…..more
What is the cost of a borehole?
The demands of commercial competition mean that drilling contractors are often reluctant to quote prices unless one can provide specific details…..more
